The Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO) is a government agency under the auspices of the Ministry of Industries and Innovation. ISAC Accreditation is an independent department within the ISIPO and is the national body with responsibility for Accreditation in Iceland. The scope of operation is defined by Act No 24/2006, on Accreditation etc.
ISAC provides accreditation of inspection bodies, certification bodies, laboratories (testing and calibration) and notified bodies, in accordance with the relevant ÍST EN ISO/IEC 17000 series of standards and guides and the harmonised ÍST EN 45000 series of European standards. Additionally ISAC is the responsible body in Iceland for GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
ISAC was established in 1992 within the Bureau of Certification, Metrology and Safety Standards. In July 2005 all accreditation activities were moved to the Icelandic Consumer Office but due to conflicts of interest, ISAC became an independent division within the Icelandic Patent Office in May 2006.
