New co-operation agreement between the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office will increase education on intellectual property rights for students and staff of the university.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, og Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of the ISIPO, signed the co-operation agreement yesterday. The goal of the co-operation is to boost awareness and knowledge of intellectual property rights by increasing education for university staff and students. Both parties agree on the importance of practical application of research and the protection of intellectual property for society.

The co-operation will expand IP education resources available to the university as well as allow students and staff members to take part in projects in participation with the ISIPO that focus on increasing the knowledge of protecting IP rights and utilizing research.

Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of the ISIPO:

"This agreement is built on a solid foundation and a fruitful co-operation. I am especially delighted to sign this agreement just in time for World IP Day, that is celebrated on the 26th of April every year, as this years theme is IP and youth. The agreement with the university will increase opportunities for its staff members and students to seek out knowledge on IP rights which are an essential part of success in innovation, research and development."

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland:

„It is a pleasure to formalise and strengthen the good co-operation that the University of Iceland and the ISIPO have had through the years. The new strategy of the university has an increased emphasis on innovation. Intellectual property rights is an important component of innovation and the utilization of research as is visible in the successes of so many companies that have spun off the University of Iceland. The agreement will give staff members and students increased opportunities to build their knowledge of IP rights, whether that will be used within the university or in industry after graduation."
