The number of trademark applications filed by Icelandic entities increased by 34% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The total number of trademark applications increased by 7% in the same period according to new statistics published by the ISIPO.

  • 1.131 trademark applications were filed in the first three months of 2021, a year-on-year increase of 7%.
  • The biggest increase (+34%) was in the number of trademark applications filed by Icelandic entities. 215 trademark applications were filed by Icelandic entities in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 160 in the same period of 2020.
  • The number of validated European Patents (EP) decreased by 11%. 338 EPs were validated in Iceland in the first three months of 2021 compared to 379 EPs in the same period in 2020.
  • The number of national patent applications decreased. The ISIPO received only 5 national patent applications in the first quarter of 2021.

Trademarks

The ISIPO received a total of 1.131 trademark applications in the period January – March in 2021. This is a year-on-year increase of 7% compared to the same period of 2020. Trademarks filed by Icelandic entities increased by 34%. 215 trademark applications were filed by Icelandic entities in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 160 in 2020. The number of trademark applications filed by Icelandic entities continue to rise after increasing by 5.2% in 2020 despite the economic downturn in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

National trademark applications filed by foreign entities decreased by 4%. 142 national trademark application were filed by foreign entities in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 148 in the same period in 2020. However, international trademark applications filed through the Madrid system saw a year-on-year increase of 4%. The ISIPO received 773 international trademark (Madrid) applications in the first three months of 2021 compared to 745 in the same period of 2020.

In total 628 trademarks were published by the ISIPO in the first quarter of 2021. This is a decrease of 40% compared to the same period in 2020. The biggest decrease was in the number of published international (Madrid) trademarks. 379 international trademarks were published over the period January – March while 817 international trademarks were published in the same period in 2020. The number of Icelandic trademarks that were published by the ISIPO increased by 6%. 101 trademarks filed by Icelandic entities were filed in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 93 in the same period of 2020. Published trademarks of foreign entities increased by 15%. 150 trademarks filed by foreign entities were published in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 131 in the same period in 2020.

The decrease in the number of trademarks published by the ISIPO can to some extent be explained by a shift in priorities within the organisation. In 2020 a special emphasis was placed on trademark examination but since the beginning of 2021 the ISIPO has seen an increased workload in legal reasoning. The ISIPO plans to put a renewed emphasis on trademark examination in the second quarter of 2021 which should deliver an increased number of trademarks published in that period.

Patents

The number of national patent applications received in the first three months of 2021 was the fewest ever received in a quarter, or five in total. International PCT applications by Icelandic entities were six in the same period.

The number of European Patents (EP) that were validated in Iceland decreased by 11%. 338 EPs were validated in Iceland in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 379 in the same period of 2020.

This is a continuation of a trend from last year which saw a decrease in EPs validated in Iceland for the first time since Iceland joined the European Patent Convention in 2004.
